It Wasn't 'Spying'

No matter what the clueless reporters or Bill Quick has to say, Susan Lindaur was not charged (or accused by the government) with "spying."

Former DeFazio, Wyden employee accused of spying

Lindauer faces 11 separate charges, including conspiracy, acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government, engaging in illegal financial transactions with a foreign government and making false statements. The crimes carry sentences of up to 10 years each.

I think you'll find it's a bit more than simple unregistered agency, Lynxx.

The Smoking Gun has a copy of the indictement. It is for Susan Lindauer, Raed Noman Al-Anbuke (+aliases), and Wisam Noman Al-Anbuke (+aliases).

Count 1: All - Conspiracy to Act as Unregistered Agents of a Foreign Government.

Count 2: Lindauer - Acting as an Unregistered Agent of a Foreign Government.

Count 3: Raed - Acting as an Unregistered Agent of a Foreign Government.

Count 4: Wisam - Acting as an Unregistered Agent of a Foreign Government.

Count 5: Lindauer - Prohibited Financial Transactions with the Government of Iraq.

Count 6: Lindauer - Violation of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

Count 8: Wisam - Making False Statements.

Count 9: Wisam - Making False Statements.

Count 10: Wisam - Making False Statements.

Count 11: Raed - Making False Statements.

Lindauer faces four charges (counts 1,2,5 and 6). None of the 11 counts have anything to do with violations of the Espionage Act or deal with access to classified/sensitive info. It wasn't spying. (Not yet, anyway.)

UPDATE: My memory didn't fail me — Billygate, during the Carter presidency, revolved around Billy Carter failing to register as a foreign agent of the Libyan government.
